No, not for ABC’s American Idol, but for Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, who is already the idol of many and expected to be confirmed this week as the first Black woman Supreme Court Justice. If confirmed, it will be a full circle moment as Judge Jackson will replace Associate Justice Stephen Breyer, for whom she clerked from 1999 to 2000. Justice Breyer plans to retire late June or early July. So, we will have to wait a few months for Judge Jackson to officially become Justice Jackson, but what a Juneteenth we will have.
Before jumping to June, let’s dive into April with a focus on our finances, and not just Tax Day. April is National Financial Literacy Month and TMBA is planning events ranging from basic financial planning to estate planning. Be on the look out for Financial Literacy for Lawyers, a Zoom event tentatively scheduled for April 25, 2022, 12:00 – 1:00 PM PT.
Now, back to June. We are excited to return to an in-person Juneteenth Celebration. Planning is in the works so be sure to check your emails and the TMBA website for more details.
One last note before I go …
TMBA congratulates TMBA member Judge Fred W. Slaughter on his appointment to serve as a federal district judge for the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Judge Slaughter will preside over matters in Santa Ana in the Court’s Southern Division. Judge Slaughter has always been a phone call away to mentor students and young attorneys, and he hosted TMBA’s inaugural Annual Gala and Installation Dinner.
Please check out the Congratulations section below for more information about Judge Slaughter’s appointment and career, and enjoy a couple of photos of Judge Slaughter connecting with our students (at my swearing-in ceremony)!
CONGRATULATIONS JUDGE SLAUGHTER, recipient of TMBA's Judge of the Year award in 2019.
In Solidarity,
Hollie
