As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we recognize the contributions and strong voices of legal scholars and counselors, such as Charlotte E. Ray, the first Black American woman to become a lawyer in the United States, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. It is with their spirit for social justice, that TMBA denounces District Attorney Todd Spitzer’s wanton injection of racism in the practices and policies of the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and calls for his immediate resignation.
We look forward to connecting with all of you at our General Body Meeting on Tuesday, March 22nd.
In solidarity, Hollie
Hollie N. Washington, Esq.
Thurgood Marshall Bar Association President
I wish I could say that racism and prejudice were only distant memories. We must dissent from the indifference. We must dissent from the apathy. We must dissent from the fear, the hatred and the mistrust…We must dissent because America can do better, because America has no choice but to do better. ~ Justice Thurgood Marshall

TMBA celebrates the legacy of Charlotte E. Ray
In Recognition of Women’s History Month TMBA congratulates former TMBA President Kimberly LaSalle, the 2022 Fay Stender Award Honoree
California Women Lawyers (CWL) selected Kimberly La Salle as the 2022 Fay Stender Award honoree.
CWL established the Fay Stender Award in 1982in honor of Fay Stender, a Bay Area attorney who spent much of her professional life fighting for prisoners' rights. Some of her better-known clients included Black Panther leader Huey Newton, and the Soledad Brothers, including Black Guerrilla Family founder George Jackson. In recognition of its namesake, CWL gives the award to a feminist attorney, who, like Fay Stender, is committed to the representation of women, disadvantaged groups and unpopular causes, and whose courage, zest for life and demonstrated ability to effect change as a single individual makes her a role model for women attorneys.
The nomination highlighted Kimberly's many contributions to the legal community at large and steadfast dedication to improving access to justice and to fostering a more diverse and inclusive legal system.
We congratulate Kimberly on receiving this most prestigious and deserving award!
