NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Oct. 7, 2013—The Orange County Bar Association Appellate Law Section will hold the seminar “U.S. Supreme Court Preview”, and present the David G. Sills Award for Appellate Excellence to Richard A. Derevan, Esq. on October 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m., at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach.
Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, University of California, Irvine, School of Law, and John Eastman, Professor and former Dean, Chapman University School of Law, and Founding Director, Center for Constitutional Jurisprudence, will present a preview of the most important cases for the United States Supreme Court’s upcoming October 2013 term. This will include a discussion of the possible/likely outcomes of those cases and the implications of the Court’s anticipated decisions on other areas of law.
The David G. Sills Award recipient, Richard A. Derevan, Esq., Of Counsel in the Costa Mesa office of Snell & Wilmer LLP, and a past chair of the Appellate Law Section, is the first attorney to receive the award. A California State Bar certified appellate specialist, Mr. Derevan has been lead counsel in more than 300 state and federal appeals and writ proceedings. He has earned a widespread reputation as an effective and ethical appellate advocate. Award presentation remarks will be made by Hon. Raymond J. Ikola, California Court of Appeal, Fourth District, Division 3, Marjorie Fuller, Esq., Law Offices of Marjorie Fuller, and Robin Meadow, Esq., Partner, Greines, Martin, Stein & Richland, LLP. Hon. Nathan R. Scott, Orange County Superior Court, will be the event emcee.
The Orange County Bar Association Appellate Law Section bestowed the first David G. Sills Award in 2010 to its namesake, the Honorable David G. Sills, who served as Presiding Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Fourth District, Division Three, for 20 years. Later awards recognized Associate Justices Sheila Prell Sonenshine (ret.) and William F. Rylaardsam.
